"I have rarely met someone in my life as visionary as Dr. Anderson in action here: youtu.be/Bm圎TSjEUT8 Out of hundreds of possible schools, CCJHS was chosen last year as a spotlight school for the Summit Learning program. This student-centered approach to instruction has an ultimate goal of teaching students to internalize 16 Habits of Success that will empower them throughout their lives. Summit Learning is an innovative approach to education that helps teachers implement a technology-supported, project-based curriculum. Anderson made was piloting Summit Learning in her school. One of the best instructional decisions Dr. Her abilities as an instructional leader are impressive. She was determined to create a school where students could get a first-class education. Anderson’s vision went beyond improving morale. There was nothing wrong with the teachers. There was nothing wrong with the students. Schools typically spend multiple years trying to revamp their instruction and improve the quality of education being provided before the ATSI designation is removed. Just one year after we were placed on the Additional Targeted Support and Improvement (ATSI) list, the designation was removed. Most importantly, the students are learning. "Compared to when I first started, going into school is like going into an alternate universe," said Shull. When some of her sixth grade teachers hit an impressive learning target, she went out and bought tacos and had the teachers join her in the hallway! This is just one of many examples of how much she has changed the culture at CCJHS. She tweets about it, posts on Instagram, and livestreams on Facebook. She is always looking for ways to highlight the good things that are going on in her school. She helped her school realize it wasn’t teachers vs. Anderson’s envisioned a school where teachers and students had meaningful relationships. They started looking for ways to bring joy to the students.ĭr. They didn't have to focus on what was wrong with their school. The staff didn't have to be so serious all the time. This became an annual tradition, and the students and faculty alike look forward to it! It may seem silly, but the faculty dance indicated something was shifting in the school. What a difference it has made!įor the beginning of the year, she choreographed a dance routine that the faculty performed for the students. "Be the leader," she told her staff. Today, her school has a simple, new motto: Grit. Her first hurdle was to overhaul the school culture, and did she ever! Every grade level had its own T-shirts with their own mottos. Her vision was to create a school where every student felt loved and accepted, and where every teacher felt valued and supported. Anderson accepted the principal position knowing she'd have an uphill battle. The school was placed by the state of Tennessee on the Additional Targeted Support and Improvement (ATSI) list.ĭr. Student and teacher morale was low, as well as test scores. Anderson is one of the most amazing women on the planet!
